Tom Anderson on Google+

Whenever Tom Anderson comes out from retirement to comment on technology, which mind you has been rare to never in the last three years or so years since leaving MySpace, it is surely going to get some buzz. Case in point, like when he commented on a Google+ forum his thoughts about the new platform, Facebook and Twitter and the end of an era that was MySpace + Tom. Overall it’s pretty positive, and like me, he looks forward to seeing what all these companies do to evolve social. I for one am thrilled to see life from Tom again.

Early Review: Round up Your Networking Circles with Google+

As if they timed this to coincide with Social Media Day, Google released an invite-only preview of their new social site called Google+. I was lucky enough to snag an invite and within minutes I was up and running wild in the new platform.

Initial reaction, as most people have already expressed, was “OMG, it looks just like Facebook!” But I quickly dismissed that and remembered that the Facebook user interface is not an original idea, so why should I expect this to be any different? To quote Picasso, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal,” and in a way this new feature from Google is something like that. More

MySpace’s Second Chance

You know the feeling when you breakup with someone after a long relationship and all you want to do is remove that person or thing from your life so you could move on? You try really hard to move on and eventually do, maybe occasionally checking up to see the latest happenings, but only for a moment because it left me with that emptiness and burning, irritating question “What happened?” Then, THEN, that person you had a relationship suddenly reveals to the world that they have an awesome new love and you can’t help but to be slightly jealous? Well I can only imagine that’s what some former-MySpace employees are feeling today, myself included. More

Jumping Back Into the Social Media Ring

It has been a year since I touched this blog. What have I been doing all this time? Well truth be told, I was a bit burned out by all that swirls around Social Media, Social Networks and everything that was associated with it. Words like”virality” and “social proof” were like nails screeching across a chalkboard to my ears. I, frankly, needed a break.

Now a year later, I’m ready to jump back into the ring. <!–more–> I’ve recently taken up a couple of clients, working on small Social Media Marketing Campaigns for them and I have to say it’s kind of exciting again — getting to know new products, tools and discovering new platforms allowing people to engage with each other. At times it can be overwhelming trying to keep up with the latest new thing, but then I think to myself,  ”Wasn’t it always like that? Just chill out and do your thing!”

As you know people are inherently social creatures. As long as that remains a fact, social media is here to stay and so am I. Onward now my social media minions!

Finally, a Social Media Marketing event

There was a virtual social media conference a couple of weeks ago that I would have attended had it not been like $600, granted I think it spanned a couple of days. This one, the Social Media Marketing 2010, seems more intimate with limited number of attendees, within my budget and highly more focused towards my current profession. Therefore, this is the winning conference of the summer for me. After this, it’s head down on my projects. I looking forward to hearing what these guys and gals have to say, especially if it is something I don’t already know. See you all there!

Yet another blog about social media tips

Earlier this month I co-presented at the Career College Association conference in Las Vegas, speaking on the topic of Social Media tips from Big Brands. It was a strange feeling, trying to bring humor into the room with slides filled with interesting case studies and data but sprinkled with distracting LOLcats. I left feeling OK about the week, but happy it was over. Here’s a stripped down version of our presentation, sadly with my credit removed but happy to see it more focused for educational institutions as it probably should have been from the very beginning.

There are tons of blogs and social media experts out there that will give you all similar general tips of “have a goal, know what you want to measure, talk with your audience not at them and above all listen and adapt to the feedback.” Bottom line, Social Media is a conversation; it’s really up to you now (as the business) to influence and continue the conversation. You do not have to use all the tools out there, but find the ones that fit your needs and above all engaging, easy to use and allow sharing by your target audience.

Thank you to the Jeff’s at CUNet.

June 30 is Social Media day – tell your friends

What do you get when a bunch of social media experts or wanna-bees get together to talk about their achievements and the great new start-up they are working on or covering? A networking event. A party. So why not make it official? Why not declare a Social Media day and take our online conversations offline and in real life? That’s what the fine folks at Mashable have done by launching a movement announcing that June 30 is now (unofficially) Social Media day. Over 500 events have sprung up world wide; a remarkable feat and an example of how conversation can travel across seas and country borders. It’s not too late to start your own, or join one of the many.

A ‘Kanye’ Moment At The Oscars

Oh yes. It happened. A red-haired woman barged on stage and interrupted Director Roger Ross Williams as he accepted the Oscar for the Best Short Documentary. As it turns out Salon got the scoop right away, in what turns out to be a standing battle between the two once collaborators  (yes, she used to work on the film). It wasn’t as dramatic as Kayne’s now infamous moment at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, but it sure was strange. I look forward to the red-haired-Kanye memes in the morning. Okay, well maybe not.

No Fail Night (for once) For Twitter

I can only imagine that the Twitter office was on full NOC alert tonight with all the tweets flooding the site during the show. And thankfully for them and all their twitter users, twitter did not fail. It is good news considering yesterday’s news about accounts being compromised by a new diet hacker and error messages galore in the trending topics area. So, hats off to you, Twitter, and all of you fans for posting to #oscars2010, #academyawards, #oscars and countless other trending topics during another just so-so Oscar’s show.

A Twitter Trend I Can’t Stand

This past week I came across a trending topic on Twitter called #icantstandyou, which I thought was genius because it was Monday, however as it turned out was not a fun trending topic where people could, in often humorous fashion, rant about why they could not stand something or someone. Rather, it was an attempt to pump up a song for some local R&B singer that I have never heard of. Disappointed, I started to follow the link trail of what this song was all about, clicking on people’s profiles and other hash tags. After about 30 minutes I finally found myself on a MySpace page where the song lived. I felt cheated. NONE of the tweets that contained the hash tag and trending topic even remotely described why #icantstandyou was something I should care about. One person directed me to what turned out to be the music artist’s twitter page, but even there I was lost in a sea of garbled tweets of @ and # marks making no sense.

This got me thinking more and more about how people use Twitter to promote themselves, pieces of content or their product brand. To me this was a big social media marketing FAIL. Or was it? It did get the top trending topic in San Francisco that day, and a lot of people seemed to be tweeting or re-tweeting about it. But then again, how long had people been using #icantstandyou before this artist jumped on the bandwagon inflating the original trending topic just to promote the song? Today if you visit the twitter page, you may still see references to the song, but now I see people are posting random, and sometimes funny, things again. Anyway, if you use Twitter for marketing, do it right. And PLEASE, for goodness sake, write some sort of quick description about what you are promoting and do not just post a trending topic over and over in your tweets. It’s rude, and ultimate hurts you in the long run.

So with that, I will finish this post by just saying: Hey #icanstandyou – I actually cannot stand you. So there.
